Graffiti on Overpass Column in Dappled Light

by Cathy McBride

Heavy grey clouds hang low over a concrete overpass support column wrapped in layers of vibrant spray paint. The wall surface is rough and pitted, showing weathered patches where older tags bleed through fresh crimson and electric blue strokes. Dappled sunlight falls through the sparse, brown leaves of a late autumn tree, creating shifting pools of bright yellow and deep shadow across the artwork. Behind the column, the bright white glow of a convenience store sign cuts through the gloom, casting a sterile light against the organic chaos of the street art. A rusted metal pipe runs vertically along the right edge, its orange flaking paint mirroring the decay of the concrete foundation below. The ground is paved with cracked asphalt, scattered with dry, curled leaves that catch the fragmented light.
