Graffiti Over Mural in Khartoum Alley

by Alexis Singleton

Late afternoon sun cuts across a narrow alley in Khartoum, illuminating a wall where an older mural peeks out beneath fresh, chaotic graffiti layers. The paint textures vary from smooth, dried surfaces to rough, wet patches where new tags have been applied. Rain-darkened kiosk tiles glisten nearby, reflecting the clear, dry mountain light that defines the season's turn. Steam rises in thin, white ribbons from street grates, curling upward into the cool air. The wet pavement creates deep, glossy reflections of the surrounding structures. Leading lines formed by the alley walls and utility pipes guide the gaze toward the faded colors hidden under the newer, bolder strokes. A jagged edge of red paint stops abruptly against a patch of gray, weathered stucco.
