Glass Ice Coating Pine Branches in Swedish Winter

by Emilio Myers

Thick layers of clear ice encrust every twig and needle on pine trees standing against a pale, heavy sky. Flat, diffuse light from a midday overcast turns the frozen limbs into solid glass sculptures. Snow blankets the flat ground below in an unbroken sheet of white, stretching toward a distant, low horizon line where the tree line meets the plain. The branches hang heavily under the weight of the glaze, drooping slightly in a rigid posture. Fine cracks appear in the ice coating near the thicker boughs. A small shard of ice hangs from the very tip of a lower branch, reflecting the gray sky above.
