Ice Glazed Mailboxes Under Winter Arctic Sky

by Gabriel Foster

Thick, transparent ice coats a row of gray metal mailboxes standing against a pale blue sky near Tromsø. The coating transforms the utilitarian boxes into heavy, sculptural forms, their sharp edges softened by the accumulation. Bare birch branches rise behind the line, their twigs encrusted with the same white glaze, creating a textured backdrop of frozen needles. Soft, diffuse daylight from the clear winter sky reflects off the curved surfaces, creating bright, sharp highlights where the ice is thickest. The ground beneath is a flat expanse of white snow, untouched and silent. One mailbox handle, encased in a thick shell of ice, catches the light at the very edge of the frame.
