Sleet Coated Birch Branches Winter Finland Evening
by Lester Garza
Honeyed evening light falls through heavy overcast skies, illuminating a stark Finnish plain where a sleet shower has transformed the landscape. Thin birch branches stretch across the upper right third, their pale bark encased in a thick, transparent shell of clear ice. Each twig glistens with frozen droplets, creating a jagged, crystalline texture against the muted gray background. The ground below appears as a flat, white expanse of snow, devoid of footprints or movement. Shadows cast by the low sun stretch long and soft across the icy surface, showing the cold stillness of the dead of winter. The ice on the nearest branch catches the golden glow, revealing tiny internal fractures and a smooth, glassy sheen that contrasts with the rough bark beneath. One droplet hangs frozen at the tip of a lower limb, suspended in the air.
