Hoarfrost Needles on Bare Twig at Sunset

by Susan Corona

Iridescent white needles of hoarfrost coat a slender, dark twig in an intricate crystalline lattice. The fine ice structures spike outward in every direction, catching the final golden light of a setting sun near Kafr el-Dawwar. Thick mist softens the background into a pale, diffuse wash of gray and silver, separating the sharp foreground subject from the indistinct earth below. The dry season air has left the surrounding vegetation dormant and brown, visible as muted earth tones beneath the frost. Sunlight glints off the tips of individual ice spikes, creating tiny points of brightness against the cool, shadowed wood. The texture appears brittle and sharp, against the soft, weightless fog that hangs in the air.
