Glass-Coated Branches in Lapland Dawn Shadow

by Catherine Koch

Rim light slices through the deep shadow of a Lapland forest, outlining bare branches encased in thick, transparent ice. Low-hanging gray clouds press against the treetops, diffusing the pale morning glow that touches only the highest tips of the frozen limbs. The ice forms a continuous, jagged sheath, turning every twig into a fragile rod of clear glass. Behind the dark, silhouetted wood, the sky holds a faint, cool brightness, suggesting the sun has just risen but remains blocked by the canopy. The ground lies in total darkness, obscured by the heavy shadow and the low cloud layer. A sharp, white edge of ice on the nearest branch catches the light, defining the boundary between the frozen wood and the gray void.
