Giant Mushroom Forest in Kansai Wheat Field

by Rachael Page

Darkened earth and rain-puddled ruts stretch across a Kansai field where golden wheat stalks stand silhouetted against a low sunrise. The horizon glows through morning haze, casting long shadows over the wet ground. Rising directly from the mud beside stacked hay bales are massive mushrooms, their caps spanning the width of umbrellas. Their smooth, pale surfaces reflect the early light while ordinary farm tools rest nearby as if untouched by the scale shift. The wet soil rests on the thick stems, at the base of the impossible fungi in the practical reality of the harvest season. One water droplet hangs from the edge of the nearest cap.
