Giant Umbrella Mushrooms in Kütahya Hop Yard

by Alana Garner

Copper-toned light washes over a Kütahya hop yard where strings of dried vines rattle in the autumn wind. Stacked hay bales line the edge of the field, their rough textures catching the rich amber glow of the early winter sunset. Between the rows, irrigation water shines like scattered glass, reflecting the fading sky. Rising from the earth among ordinary farm objects are mushrooms with caps the size of umbrellas, their pale stems thick and sturdy against the dark soil. The impossible fungi stand tall and still, their smooth surfaces against the dry, brittle hops. Shadows stretch long across the ground, showing the scale of the forest that has sprouted overnight. One shadow of a mushroom cap falls sharply across a wooden stake.
