Summer Thunderstorm Over Golden Wheat Forest in on a fern-lined forest floor in South Sudan

Summer Thunderstorm Over Golden Wheat Forest

by Vanessa Doyle

Raindrops streak down from a darkening sky, catching the low sun's glow as they fall through a field of golden wheat. The stalks bend slightly under the weight of the water, their amber heads nodding toward the ground. Fern fronds line the forest floor beneath the grain, their deep green surfaces glistening with moisture. A shaft of warm light breaks through the heavy clouds, illuminating the texture of the wheat heads and the wet veins of the fern leaves. The ground is a mix of dark soil and scattered greenery, saturated by the sudden downpour. Droplets rest on the tips of the wheat, reflecting the orange and purple hues of the twilight sky before rolling down the stalks to join the puddles forming in the earth.
