Geologist Boots Beside Drill Cores in Mazar-i-Sharif

Soft late-afternoon light washes over a row of cylindrical rock cores laid out on dark tarps. The earthy tones of the sediment layers range from pale beige to deep rust, cut by sharp, straight edges. Beside the first core, a pair of heavy-duty geologist boots stands in perfect alignment, their rubber soles caked with dried mud and dust. Water droplets rest on the fabric of the boots and glisten on the tarps, evidence of a recent light drizzle. The ground beneath is dry and dusty, against the wet surfaces. Symmetrical lines guide the eye from the foreground boots down the length of the cores toward the horizon. one drop of water slides down the side of the nearest boot, marking the edge of the frame.
