Geologist Washing Garnet Sand in Shenzhen

by Bobby Knight

Soft overcast light washes over a bright midmorning scene where a geologist crouches beside dark, jagged rocks to wash garnet sand. The worker holds a shallow metal pan, swirling water to separate the deep red crystals from the lighter sediment. Tiny red specks float against the grey slurry, catching the diffuse light. Beside the rocks, industrial metal housings with glowing indicator lights reflect faintly on the wet surfaces. Converging lines from the surrounding equipment guide toward a vanishing point in the distance. The dry season leaves the ground dusty and pale, against the wet pan. A cluster of crimson garnets settles at the bottom of the swirling water.
