Geologist Rinsing Red Sandstone Cores in Stream
by Earl Schultz
Silvery winter light falls through the predawn darkness, illuminating a figure crouched beside a rocky geology outcrop near Afyonkarahisar. The individual scrubs a cylindrical red sandstone core under a gentle stream of water, sending small rivulets cascading over the stone's rough, layered surface. Humid air hangs heavy, evidenced by the sheen on the wet rocks and the dampness clinging to the person's clothing. Late summer heat lingers in the stillness, against the cool, metallic glow of the early morning. The surrounding landscape falls into deep shadow, creating vast negative space that isolates the disciplined act of rinsing the geological specimen against the dark, craggy earth. Water droplets hang suspended on the edge of the red stone before falling into the stream below.
