Muralist arranging color studies on scaffold plank
by Alice Munoz
Rain-slicked stone surrounds a deep excavation trench where a worker stands on a narrow wooden scaffold plank. Several small rectangular color studies lie spread across the wet wood, their paint surfaces gleaming under the diffuse gray light of a midday drizzle. The worker wears heavy rubber boots and a high-visibility vest, hands steady as they align the papers against the rough grain of the plank. Water beads roll off the edges of the studies and drip onto the damp earth below. In the background, the rough-hewn walls of the excavation rise steeply, showing layers of local Greek soil and exposed bedrock. The scene shows the quiet discipline of a trade continuing despite the monsoon conditions, with the vibrant colors of the studies contrasting sharply against the muted tones of the wet stone and dark wood. One droplet hangs from the corner of the nearest study, trembling before falling.
