Geologist Boots Beside Fresh Drill Cores at Dusk
Copper-toned light spills across a dusty work area near Tucson, illuminating heavy rubber boots planted firmly on dry earth. Beside them, cylindrical drill cores rest in neat rows on white tarps, their cross-sections revealing striated layers of rock and mineral deposits. The low winter sun casts long, sharp shadows that stretch across the fabric, showing the rough texture of the tarps and the smooth, cut surfaces of the cores. Above, dramatic clouds gather in shades of slate and bruised purple, against the warm glow near the horizon. The boots show signs of recent fieldwork, caked with fine red dust. A thin layer of frost rests on the edges of the tarp where it meets the ground, marking the dead of winter in the desert. The precise alignment of the cores suggests a moment of pause in an analytical process.
