Cracked Dome Ruins in Evening Light

by Millie Rosales

Honeyed evening light spills across the skeletal remains of a bath complex near Mazar-i-Sharif, where cracked domes arch over a weed-choked courtyard. Low ground fog pools in the depressions between broken stone tiles, catching the warm glow of the setting sun that wraps the horizon in a soft haze. Patches of early spring green push through fissures in the weathered masonry, softening the sharp edges of crumbling brickwork. The light casts long, soft shadows that stretch across the uneven floor, highlighting the rough texture of eroded surfaces and the delicate stems of wild grasses. A fragment of a blue glazed tile lies half-buried in the dust near a collapsed archway, its color muted by centuries of exposure. The scene ends with a shadow stretching across a cracked stone slab.
