Abandoned Fire Station in Roofless Hammam in inside a roofless hammam near Gwangju

Abandoned Fire Station in Roofless Hammam

by Leila Phillips

Rain falls in brief sheets across the open roof of a structure near Gwangju, mixing the silhouette of an old fire station with the stone arches of a hammam. Heavy steel engine bay doors hang precariously from rusted hinges, their grey surfaces streaked with dark water. Puddles gather on the cracked concrete floor, mirroring the distant glow of city lights that begin to pierce the twilight. Moisture shimmers on the wet stone walls and peeling paint. Layers of depth recede from the foreground debris into the shadowed archways of the ancient bathhouse. One drop slides down a vertical edge, marking the boundary between the old stone and the encroaching urban night.
