Flash Flood Arroyo Red Rock Xochimilco in from a ridge above layered foothills near Xochimilco, Mexico City

Flash Flood Arroyo Red Rock Xochimilco

by Joaquin Crosby

Muddy torrent water surges through a deep arroyo cut into layered red rock formations. Heavy gray clouds press low against the sky, casting the landscape into dark silhouette against the honeyed evening light breaking through the back. The dry season leaves the surrounding foothills bare and dusty, against the churning brown flood. Strata of sedimentary stone rise steeply on either side of the channel, their rough textures softened by the distance. A ridge overlooks the scene from above, framing the water's violent path across the valley floor. The final edge of a rock layer catches the last golden ray, glowing faintly against the deep shadow of the canyon wall.
