Fireflies Over Gravestones in Monsoon Night in from a moonlit breakwater near San Salvador de Jujuy

Fireflies Over Gravestones in Monsoon Night

by Karen Dennis

Steady rain coats the weathered limestone gravestones of a churchyard near San Salvador de Jujuy, turning their surfaces into dark, wet mirrors. Beams of artificial light sweep across the damp grass, illuminating clusters of glowing fireflies that pulse against the slate-gray sky. Water droplets rest on the mossy edges of the crosses, catching the fleeting sparks of bioluminescence. The reflection in the puddles creates a symmetrical duplicate of the blinking insects and the stone markers above. Deep shadows pool between the rows of headstones while the wet earth absorbs the ambient glow. One drop slides down the curve of a polished granite marker, distorting the reflection of a bright green light.
