Fireflies on Northern Ireland Forest Trail at Predawn

by Freda McKinney

Soft amber points of light drift through the dense canopy of a Northern Irish forest just before dawn. The narrow dirt trail winds beneath ancient oaks, their rough bark etched in deep shadows. Above, a clear sky displays scattered stars against a velvet black expanse. The ground remains covered in frost-kissed ferns and damp earth, glowing faintly where the insect lights touch. Cool blue moonlight bleeds across the leaf litter, against the warm, intermittent flicker of the fireflies. Tiny wings blur into streaks of gold as they navigate the cold, still air. A cluster of glowing insects hovers near a low-hanging branch, casting a miniature pool of warmth on the surrounding moss.
