Fireflies Glow on Freetown Harbor Trail

Pale green sparks drift low over a wet forest path beside a dark harbor in Sierra Leone before dawn. The air holds a fine, steady drizzle that turns the ground into a slick mirror reflecting the lanterns lining the distant water. Tall trees frame the trail in deep shadow, their rough bark visible only where faint rim light catches the edges of leaves. Bioluminescent dots hover in clusters above the damp earth, creating a scattered constellation against the black canopy. The cold light from the sky casts a steel-blue tone over the wet foliage, showing the distance between the glowing insects and the silent, dark harbor beyond. Tiny water droplets rest on the tips of ferns along the trail edge.
