Fireflies Glow Along Forest Trail Under Predawn Sky

by Dominick Hays

Soft green bioluminescence drifts through the damp understory of a dense forest near Wanaka during late spring predawn. Tiny points of light cluster along a narrow dirt path, their glow reflecting in shallow puddles formed by a recent light drizzle. Above the canopy, a faint celestial or auroral sheen washes the sky in pale blues and greys, casting a cold, distant light that does not warm the scene. Raindrops cling to fern fronds and pine needles, creating a slick, dark texture against the soft, floating orbs. The mirrored surface of the wet ground doubles the firefly trail, creating a symmetrical path of light that disappears into the shadowed tree trunks. One raindrop slides down a leaf, catching the faint glow before falling into the dark soil.
