Ferry Ramp Piling System Under Winter Dawn Light in beneath transmission towers in Netherlands

Ferry Ramp Piling System Under Winter Dawn Light

by Luciana Kaufman

Deep shadows engulf the concrete ferry ramp and its massive steel piling system, stretching across the exposed tidal mudflats of the Netherlands. Only the highest edges of the metal beams catch the first light of dawn, creating thin, sharp lines of silver against the dark gray structure. Above, the lattice legs of transmission towers loom like skeletal giants, their bases disappearing into the gloom. The ground is a patchwork of wet, dark silt and scattered ice crystals, remnants of a storm that just cleared. A cool, pale blue light falls through the heavy winter sky, illuminating the texture of rust on the lower pilings. At the edge of the ramp, a drop of condensation clings to a rusted bolt, marking the boundary between the cold metal and the dark water below.
