Iceland Ferry Ramp Piling System Low Tide in beside a storm surge barrier in Iceland

Iceland Ferry Ramp Piling System Low Tide

by Pierce Pate

Rusted steel pilings rise vertically from the exposed tidal floor, their surfaces streaked with white salt deposits and dark oxidation. The heavy concrete ramp slopes steeply downward, ending in a jagged edge where the water once lapped. Patches of black volcanic sand and scattered gray stones fill the gaps between the structural supports. Overhead, the storm surge barrier looms as a massive gray wall, its industrial texture stark against the pale winter sky. Bright midday light flattens the shadows, revealing the rough grain of the weathered concrete and the brittle texture of dried seaweed clinging to the lower pilings. The ground remains damp, reflecting the diffuse light in small, scattered puddles.
