Night Demolition Chute Moonlight Construction Site in along a scaffolded facade in Phnom Penh

Night Demolition Chute Moonlight Construction Site

by Stella Callahan

Cold moonlight washes over a heavy steel demolition chute mouth mounted against a scaffolded building facade in Phnom Penh. The metal surface reflects the pale blue glow of the deep night sky, against the warm amber tones of nearby work lamps. Fine clouds of concrete dust and sawdust drift slowly through the air, catching the light in suspended particles that reveal the texture of the dry season air. Damp earth stains the lower sections of the structure where moisture has settled. The chute angles sharply downward, suggesting the path of debris falling through the frame. Ropes and safety harnesses hang loosely from the scaffolding, their synthetic fibers stiff in the cool night air. A final layer of grey dust coats the rim of the chute opening, marking the edge of the active work zone.
