Dripping Stalactite in Bali Limestone Cave

by Susan Ellison

Water beads form along the rough, porous edge of a limestone stalactite, hanging low enough to catch the soft, diffused glow filtering through the cave entrance. The stone surface displays deep grooves carved by centuries of mineral flow, ranging from pale cream to dark gray where moisture persists. Overhead, the cave ceiling vanishes into shadow, while the opening reveals a sky heavy with dramatic monsoon clouds. Bright midmorning light spills across the wet rock, highlighting the tension of a single water droplet stretching at the tip before falling. Beside the formation, rough limestone walls rise vertically, their texture worn smooth in places and jagged in others. at the edge is the tiny, clear reflection of the clouded sky captured within the curved surface of the hanging drop.
