Predawn Salt Blooms on Ruin Wall in among roofless stone chambers in Piedmont

Predawn Salt Blooms on Ruin Wall

by Carol Sexton

Pale grey stone fills the frame, its surface etched with deep vertical rain streaks that catch the sweeping beam of a lighthouse. Salt blooms bloom across the masonry in jagged white patches, contrasting against the dark, damp mortar of the roofless chambers. The light cuts through the predawn darkness, illuminating only a specific section of the crumbling wall while the rest fades into shadow. Winter air hangs heavy, visible as a fine mist clinging to the stone textures. The beam moves slowly, revealing the rough grain of the rock and the crystalline edges of the salt deposits before shifting away. One wet droplet rolls down the center of the illuminated stone, leaving a dark trail in its wake.
