Karst Towers in Kenyan Valley Mist in across a wide valley floor in Kenya

Karst Towers in Kenyan Valley Mist

by Elias Rowe

Steep limestone karst towers rise abruptly from a flat valley floor, their gray stone faces streaked with dark vertical watermarks from recent rainfall. A steady rain falls across the scene, turning the wide valley floor into a shimmering sheet of reflected light. The dry season grasses rest on the lower slopes, appearing brittle and golden against the wet rock. Mist rests on the base of the formations, blurring the boundary between stone and earth. Wind-sculpted ridges define the upper edges of the towers. Raindrops create small ripples on the waterlogged ground, reflecting the overcast sky. The tallest spire stands isolated at the far left edge, its peak disappearing into the low-hanging clouds.
