A research diver wades through ankle-deep turquoise surf near Phuket, gripping a wooden quadrat frame filled with living coral. The water ripples around the diver's legs, reflecting the rich amber glow of the setting sun. Thick, low-lying fog rests on the water's surface, obscuring the horizon while the wet neoprene suit glistens with droplets. In a stark violation of natural light, the entire scene sinks into deep, impenetrable shadow except for the coral quadrat itself, which burns with an inexplicable, blinding white intensity. The diver's gloved hands grip the frame edges, their details swallowed by darkness, while the coral polyps remain vividly illuminated against the surrounding gloom. one drop of water hangs from the diver's glove, refracting the impossible light onto the dark sand below.
