Coral Fragments Secured on Reef Frame

by Jason Rosas

Soft gray plankton haze diffuses the low sun filtering through the water column near a volcanic reef overhang. A diver's gloved hand presses a small coral fragment into a metal grid frame, the greenish-gray rubber against the rough black basalt behind. Tiny white specks of sediment float in the suspended water, catching the pale dawn light that bleeds through the horizon haze. The metal frame holds multiple fragments in a precise grid, their pink and orange surfaces muted by the depth. Water pressure presses against the gloves, flattening the fingers slightly as they secure the fragile living tissue to the structure. Fine sand settles on the diver's wrist, marking the boundary between the human tool and the ancient stone.
