Coral Fragments Secured on Volcanic Reef Frame

by Dominick Downs

Copper-toned light falls through the water, casting long, dark silhouettes against the volcanic reef overhang near Denpasar. A diver's hands hold a metal frame, pressing small, rough coral fragments into place within the grid. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing the sharp texture of the black volcanic rock and the smooth, rounded shapes of the new coral pieces. Slow-moving ripples distort the light at the surface, creating shifting patterns of brightness on the frame's edges. The diver's gear appears heavy and functional, against the drifting, weightless quiet of the surrounding marine environment. Fine sand grains settle gently on the lower bars of the structure, marking the boundary between the man-made frame and the natural seabed.
