Winter Damselfly on Reed at Helwan Dawn in near Helwan

Winter Damselfly on Reed at Helwan Dawn

by Morgan Dale

Cold silver light spills across the water near Helwan, turning the early morning air into a thick, white fog that softens the distant reeds. A slender damselfly rests on a single, stiff stalk rising from the mist. Its body displays translucent blue and black segments, sharp against the pale gray background. The reed bends slightly under the insect's weight, its surface rough with frost. The water below reflects the muted sky, creating a seamless horizon line. Every edge of the insect's wings catches the faint glow of the pre-dawn sun, revealing delicate veining. The tip of the reed holds a tiny droplet of condensation, frozen in place against the stillness.
