Dawn Reflections on Yellowknife Salt Flat

by Rhonda Adkins

Pale pink light from the rising sun stretches across a vast, flat expanse of salt crust near Yellowknife. The surface acts as a mirror, reflecting the softening sky and the first golden rays that touch the horizon. Patches of melting snow and shallow water create a textured mosaic of white, grey, and reflective blue. Dry grasses and small leaves skitter across the hard ground in sudden gusts, their brown and tan colors against the pale mineral earth. The landscape feels immense and still, with the horizon line blurring where the earth meets the early morning sky. A cluster of dry leaves rests on the wet salt crust in the immediate foreground, catching the low angle light.
