Cicada Emerging Shell Mekong Delta Afternoon
by Dana Luna
Hard coastal glare washes the wet season foliage in the Mekong Delta, flattening shadows against a perfectly clear sky. A cicada rests on the rough, moss-covered bark of a riverbank tree, its translucent wings still folded tight against its back. The empty, brittle shell hangs just above, a ghost of the insect's previous form. Sunlight reflects off the damp green leaves, creating sharp highlights that cut through the humid air. The insect's legs grip the textured wood with visible tension, frozen in the moment of transition. Behind the subject, the dense canopy stretches out in a wide panoramic sweep, revealing the layered greens of the delta under the relentless midday sun. one drop of dew rests on a nearby leaf, mirroring the bright sky above.
