Moth Eye Pollen Dawn Tidal Inlet Winter in beside a tidal inlet in South Africa

Moth Eye Pollen Dawn Tidal Inlet Winter

by Kai Gross

Low morning light glows through a haze of suspended dust hovering just above the damp earth near a South African tidal inlet. The frame focuses intensely on the compound eye of a moth, its hexagonal facets glistening with fine, yellow pollen grains caught in the cool winter air. The surface of the eye reflects the soft, pale horizon where the sun first breaches the mist. Tiny hairs fringe the edge of the insect's head, standing sharp against the blurred background of the dark, wet water. One grain of pollen rests precariously on the rim of a dark ommatidium, catching the faintest hint of gold from the rising light. The texture of the eye appears smooth yet segmented, detailed down to the microscopic ridges between the facets.
