Hercules Beetle on Rotting Log in Sri Lankan Rain

by Ernest Shields

Dappled sunlight falls through the dense canopy, illuminating a Hercules beetle perched on a dark, moss-covered log. The insect's glossy black exoskeleton reflects patches of bright green and soft gray fog that hangs low in the humid air. Water droplets rest on the rough bark and the beetle's curved horns, glistening under the filtered light. Fern fronds frame the left side of the view, creating a natural border around the subject. The wet season dampens the earth tones, turning the decaying wood into a rich, saturated brown. one drop of rain slides from a leaf tip near the beetle's rear legs, tracing a clear path down the textured surface before vanishing into the shadowed crevices below.
