Ice Fog Over Fairbanks Thunderheads in over a horizon of stacked thunderheads near Fairbanks

Ice Fog Over Fairbanks Thunderheads

by Kirk Terry

Soft late afternoon light falls through a dense veil of ice fog hovering above the city of Fairbanks. The air hangs heavy with visible cold as gentle snowflakes drift downward across the frame. In the distance, a massive wall of stacked thunderheads rises against the horizon, their dark gray forms contrasting sharply with the pale, diffused glow of the thawing sky. Early spring colors emerge faintly in the lower atmosphere, suggesting the season's shift despite the biting minus forty degrees. The urban structures below appear as dark, silhouetted shapes, at the base of the scene in a specific northern environment. One flake catches the light near the bottom edge, glowing white against the deep blue shadow of the street.
