Boat Builder Steams Ribs in Madurai Temple Courtyard
by Robin Bauer
Steam rises in thick, white plumes from a copper vessel set on a stone slab within a Madurai temple courtyard. A builder leans over the vessel, manipulating curved wooden ribs that are softening from the heat. Dappled sunlight falls through the dense canopy of nearby banyan trees, creating shifting patches of gold and shadow across the wet, grey flagstones. A light drizzle glistens on the dark wood and the builder's weathered hands, adding a slick sheen to the surfaces. The air appears heavy with moisture, visible as a fine mist hovering just above the steaming wood. In the background, intricate stone pillars stand in the cool season light, their carved details softened by the rain. one drop of water slides down the curve of a wooden rib, tracing a path through the grain before falling to the stone floor.
