Tofu Vendor Pressing Blocks at Kyoto Morning Market
by Nia Pittman
Wet stone slabs reflect the pale gray sky above a textile trader's stall in Pontocho. A vendor in a dark apron presses fresh white tofu blocks between heavy wooden boards, water beading on the grain. Thin rain threads fall across the scene, darkening the cedar wood of the stall and glistening on the slick tofu surfaces. Sidelight skims horizontally, carving sharp highlights along the curved edges of the wooden presses and revealing the rough texture of the wet floor. Bundles of undyed silk hang from the stall's rafters, their muted ochre tones against the stark white curds. Droplets rest on the vendor's sleeve and slide down the vertical grain of the timber posts. one drop of water falls from the edge of a wooden press, landing on the stone with a visible ripple.
