Bookmaker Gilding Leather at Ujjain Harbor Dawn

Wet stone steps along the Ujjain harbor edge reflect the pale gray sky of a rainy dawn. A bookmaker sits on a low stool, focused on gilding the cover of a thick leather book. Deep shadows swallow the foreground, while a sharp rim of cool morning light outlines the curve of the book's spine and the worker's profile. Rain has left the leather surface dark and saturated, against the bright, thin strip of gold leaf being pressed into the binding. The air hangs heavy and still, visible in the way the gold leaf adheres without trembling. One drop of water rests on the edge of the stone step near the worker's bare foot.
