Seiyun Dyers Stirring Indigo Vats at Noon
by Helen Moses
Bright, flat noon light washes over the open-air dyeing station in Seiyun, where a dyer stands knee-deep in a stone trough filled with deep indigo liquid. The water churns as a wooden paddle lifts and turns a bundle of fabric, revealing the gradual shift from pale cotton to saturated blue. Rain-slicked stones glisten around the vat, reflecting the clearing sky where gray storm clouds break into patches of harsh white glare. Salt air hangs heavy, visible in the sheen on the dyer's skin and the wet wood of the paddle. In the background, the wide panorama shows the harbor edge where the sea meets the town, showing the coastal setting under the heavy, wet light of the rainy season. The fabric drapes heavily, dripping indigo droplets that splash back into the vat.
