Octopus Over Drop Off in Kelp Forest in through a forest of kelp fronds in Fiji

Octopus Over Drop Off in Kelp Forest

by Theresa Bowen

Copper-toned light falls through the water, illuminating a dense forest of kelp fronds that sway gently in the current. An octopus hovers just above a steep drop-off, its skin texture rippling with subtle shifts in pigmentation. Suspended sand particles catch the descending beams of light, creating a shimmering haze that softens the background distance. The horizon line glows with a faint, wrapping luminosity that outlines the fronds and the creature's tentacles. Fine plankton drifts in the water column, adding depth to the cool-season underwater environment. Dark shadows pool at the bottom of the drop, against the bright, floating dust motes dancing in the shafts.
