Bison in Snowstorm Near Ramadi Reed Bed

by Florence Horton

Thick white snowflakes fall heavily against the dark, shaggy coat of a massive bison standing at the edge of a reed bed. The animal's head is lowered, ears pinned back, muscles tense beneath layers of fur dusted with fresh powder. Behind the bison, tall reeds bend under the weight of the wind, their green and brown stalks swaying violently. Reflected light from nearby water creates a soft, shimmering glow on the snow surface, against the deep shadows of the bison's face. The ground is uneven, covered in a mix of wet earth and drifting snow. One blade of reed leans sharply against the bison's flank, its tip trembling in the gust.
