Lion's Mane Mushroom on Beech Trunk in Frosty Urals in at the edge of a reed bed in the Urals

Lion's Mane Mushroom on Beech Trunk in Frosty Urals

by Dalton Pollard

Low morning light breaks through horizon haze, illuminating a dense cluster of white Lion's Mane mushroom hanging from a weathered beech trunk. Frost crystals coat the spongy, dangling tendrils of the fungus and the rough, gray bark of the fallen log. Behind the subject, tall reeds stand stiff and silvered with ice at the edge of a wetland. The air appears still, freezing the moisture into a fine, glittering layer across every surface. The mushroom's pale yellowish-white strands contrast sharply with the dark, damp wood and the muted greens of the reeds. One frost crystal rests on the tip of a lower tendril, catching the weak sunlight.
