Bactrian Camel at Dawn in Nevada Reed Bed

by Roy Erickson

Pale morning light fractures across the coarse, salt-crusted fur of a Bactrian camel, highlighting the dual humps rising against a bruised sky. The animal stands at the edge of a sparse Nevada reed bed, its thick, shaggy coat whipping violently in the dry wind. Fine dust particles dance in the first golden rays, caught between the camel's dark, alert eyes and the stiff, brown stalks of the reeds. The texture of the fur is dense and matted, against the brittle, snapping vegetation. The camel's ears are pinned back slightly, muscles taut beneath the skin, suggesting a moment of high alertness. One strand of dried grass rests on the lower jaw, trembling with the force of the gust.
