Bioluminescent Plankton in Moonlit San Francisco Waves

by Faith Cline

Silvery winter light reflects off the dark surface of the Pacific near a San Francisco breakwater, where deep night has settled. Tiny points of electric blue and violet bioluminescence ignite within the churning foam as waves crash against the concrete edge. A thick sea haze softens the distant horizon line, blending the dark water with the pale sky. The motion of the surf creates a mirrored composition, doubling the glowing particles in the wet stone and shallow pools. Cool tones dominate the scene, with the stark contrast between the black water and the sharp, cold glow of the organisms. One trail of foam curls over the rough texture of the breakwater, holding the light for a moment before dissolving.
