Thousands of Bats Emerge at Twilight on Wind-Scoured Ridge

by Francis Justice

Pale gray light reflects off the water below, illuminating a dark cave mouth carved into a wind-scoured ridge. Thousands of small, dark silhouettes pour from the opening, creating a thick, swirling cloud against the soft blue of late spring twilight. Ground fog pools in the hollows of the rocky terrain, partially obscuring the jagged base of the cliff. The bats move in a dense, fluid mass, their wings blurred by rapid motion. Shallow depth of field keeps the emerging swarm sharp while the distant water and foreground rocks soften into muted tones. A few bats hang from the cave lip, their small forms catching the faint reflection of the water below.
