Frozen Lightning Over Misty Bamboo Fireflies in under a band of cold starlight near Tonle Bassac, Phnom Penh

Frozen Lightning Over Misty Bamboo Fireflies

by Donna Blackwell

Silver winter light cuts through deep night mist, illuminating a dense grove of tall bamboo stalks near Tonle Bassac. Glowing fireflies drift slowly among the vertical green stems, their soft yellow points against the cool gray fog. A jagged bolt of lightning hangs frozen in the sky, its branching white veins stark against the dark clouds above. The wet ground below reflects the frozen lightning and the drifting insects, creating a perfect mirrored composition where the sky meets the earth. The stillness of the scene is absolute, with the electric fracture suspended in mid-air while the bamboo remains motionless in the humid air. The reflection of the lightning bolt splits the water surface, dividing the image into two identical halves of light and shadow.
