Bat Colony Emerging at Kadoma Sunset

by Eileen Smith

Golden light spills across the canopy as hundreds of bats rest on the rough bark of ancient trees near Kadoma. The sky behind them shifts from deep orange to bruised purple, marking the final moments before nightfall. Leaves skitter across the forest floor in sudden gusts, their dry rustle visible in the trembling branches. The colony hangs in patient stillness, a dark mass of fur and wings against the fading glow. Shadows stretch long across the trunks, highlighting the texture of the bark and the clustered forms of the roost. One wingtip catches the last ray of sun, glowing amber against the encroaching dark.
