Bat Colony Emerging from Cave at Twilight in Brittany in beside a tidal inlet in Brittany

Bat Colony Emerging from Cave at Twilight in Brittany

by Roberto Clements

Steel-blue twilight washes the rocky coastline of Brittany as a dense stream of bats pours from the dark mouth of a sea cave. The sky above holds the soft, diffuse glow of clearing storm clouds, casting a cool, uniform light over the wet granite and the churning tidal inlet below. Hundreds of small, dark silhouettes detach from the cavern entrance, their wings beating in rapid succession against the fading air. Damp moss rests on the cave's rough stone arch, while the water in the inlet reflects the pale, heavy sky. One bat hangs suspended near the jagged edge of the rock, its wings folded tight against its body.
